“A Whole Lotta Love!”: Rock & Roots Festival 2013, Singapore

What I Was Listening To:

One of my more controversial personal qualities is my impulsiveness. At noon, on March 19, 2013, I found out that Robert Plant, one of my biggest music idols, was playing at the Rock & Roots Festival in Singapore on March 21. By 2 PM, I had flight and festival tickets already booked. I flew out on the morning of the 21st, had the time of my life, and flew back to Manila right after. I was in and out in less than 24 hours. A few days later, I flew off to Europe.

Now, a little bit of why Mr. Plant means so much to me. My band covers Led Zeppelin. And I don’t love them because we cover them; we cover them because I love them. I sometimes feel as though my soul had a hell of time in the 1970s, and never quite caught up with the times. In terms of music preferences, most of all.

The Rock & Roots Festival was particularly special, not only because the legendary Led Zeppelin frontman headlined — he was 6 feet away from me, I was dying! — but the entire lineup was insane. Among all the acts were 32 Grammy awards. Rufus Wainwright and his signature drawl serenaded me to the point of tears with a solemn “Hallelujah.” Country legend, and patron saint of unrequited love Bonnie Raitt killed with “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Paul Simon, Jimmy Cliff, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band were all there.

As far as my impulsiveness goes, I feel guilty about it sometimes, to be honest. But, it is a tremendous part of who I am, and I’d be missing out on so much if I were so prudent about everything. I was never meant to stay put, or to make plans — to a certain extent, sure it is a necessity, but I take pride in my spontaneity, and fearlessness.

The hippie lives on!
